- Summary
- Youngblood Hawke, Herman Wouk's first novel since 1955, is a powerful and exciting narrative about a man, a talent, and the way we live now. The main character is a young novelist from the Kentucky hills, a man of great gifts who rockets to success and piles up and loses fortunes in a wild and dazzling career. This large-scale narrative, stretching over seven years and involving many counterplots and scores of characters, swirls through Kentucky, Hollywood, New York, Europe, and Washington. It provides a sweeping panorama of the United States today and it builds at last to a thundering climax as two women struggle for the love and the life of Youngblood Hawke. One of them is a brilliant girl from California whom he meets at the outset of his career and who becomes his editor and confidante, while the other is a rich and alluring married whoman of Manhattan, much older than Hawke, who snares him into a sensational adultery. With the strong narrative drive of The Caine Mutiny and the perceptive characterization of Marjorie Morningstar, this new novel adds a deep concern about the way we live today, expressed through vivid pictures of maneuvering in the worlds of entertainment, politics, and business, and a candid delineation of Hawke's love affairs. It is the biggest and most ambitious novel to date by a writer who commands a large international audience. Readers will find this massive work a most exciting experience and a new departure in Herman Wouk's extraordinary career
